We're hearing it all the time now.... female entrepreners.... the future of the British economy..... Britain's wealth is shifting to women.... women will be in control of 60% of the nation's wealth by 2025... etc. etc. What does this mean? One thing's for sure, if we keep on doing what we've always done, we'll always get what we've always got. It maybe a cliche but we do need to change
Women do business differently to men. So far, we've tried to do it like men, and with some success because we're really adaptable. But most of us have not succeeded. You only have to look at the facts to see that there are far fewer women running businesses. So what needs to change. We do.
We need to stop pretending that it's OK to behave like men. We need to stop pretending that we like leaving our children in institutions while we 'go to work'. We need to stop pretending that we like being institutionalised in corporate offices competing for the next promotion, stabbing each other in the back on the way to the top, kidding ourselves that it's working.
We need to start behaving like women. Let's leave men's business to the men. Let's re-invent women's business and make it work for us. Can we run succcessful businesses from home, with a virtual office, remote staff (also working from home), getting together physically for special occasions? I think so. It's never been easier with the internet and the technology. Let me give you this scenario:
You get up every morning and do the things a women needs to do - I'm talking about children and chores here.
You then spend 5-6 hours working on your business from home, being super-productive because you love your environment (home), and there are fewer distractions ie: chatting by the coffee machine etc.
You connect with lots of others around the world and around the corner via the technology and your business grows globally. Other people are doing things for you (mainly from home, or not, whichever is preferable for them) and you get to do the things you love doing.
You network globally and locally, physically and virtually, growing your circle of trust and your reputation.
You have a team of people all doing what they do best in ways which suit them.
Does this sound like utopia? We have the opportunity to re-write the book on women in business. We have a golden opportunity now to make it like we want it. No-one trusts the institutions now, no-one trusts the governments. Corporate women are leaving middle-management positions in droves now.
What does the future look like for you?
